The San Diego Mahjong Club provides a structured player development pipeline within its ecosystem. New players can learn Zung Jung Mahjong and participate in low-pressure, socially oriented Mahjong Night events designed for accessibility and casual play. Players seeking skill development can progress into increasingly rigorous competitive formats.
The club organizes tournaments under the Zung Jung Movement Competition Rules (ZJMCR), a standardized competitive framework. Within this system, three tournament formats are offered: Community Series of Mahjong, Series of Mahjong League, and San Diego Series of Mahjong. Each format represents a higher level of competitive structure and intensity.

Community Series of Mahjong

Community Series of Mahjong (CSoM) is a fun, one-day, non-elimination Mahjong tournament designed for players seeking organized competition in a welcoming, community-focused environment. Designed as the next step after Mahjong Night, CSoM offers a fun and approachable way to experience competitive Mahjong. Whether you’re newer to tournament play or already comfortable at the table, CSoM is designed to bring players together for a full day of exciting games, friendly rivalry, and great Mahjong.
Played using the Zung Jung Movement Competition Rules (ZJMCR), CSoM features multiple timed sessions, rotating seats, and match-point scoring to keep the competition fair, dynamic, and engaging throughout the day.
CSoM is part of the larger Zung Jung Movement tournament ecosystem. While CSoM is a standalone event, the Series of Mahjong League (SoM League) expands the same style of play into a full recurring season.
Series of Mahjong League

Series of Mahjong League (SoM League) is a recurring Mahjong tournament series that brings players together for ongoing friendly competition, skill-building, and community.
Played using the Zung Jung Movement Competition Rules (ZJMCR), each SoM League event features multiple timed sessions with rotating tables and match-point scoring, creating a fair, social, and exciting competitive experience for players of all skill levels.
Rather than being a single standalone tournament, SoM League is designed as an ongoing season of recurring events, typically held weekly over several weeks. Players build standings and rankings across the season, making every event part of a larger journey of improvement, rivalry, and community involvement.
San Diego Series of Mahjong

San Diego Series of Mahjong (SDSoM) is a large two-day Mahjong tournament designed for players seeking a deeper, more competitive experience. Inspired by the structure of the World Series of Mahjong, SDSoM brings together strong players from across different communities and regions for a weekend of high-level play, strategy, and competition.
Played using the Zung Jung Movement Competition Rules (ZJMCR), the tournament begins with a full day of preliminary rounds where players compete across multiple timed sessions and rotating tables. The top-performing players then advance to the second day’s elimination rounds, where the competition intensifies as players battle for a place at the final table.
While SDSoM is designed for serious competition, it is also meant to celebrate the social and community side of Mahjong by bringing passionate players together in one shared event experience.
The San Diego Mahjong Club does not currently plan to host this format but intends to use it for future city-level championship events within the Zung Jung Movement ecosystem.

Community Series of Mahjong San Diego Pilot | May 30, 2026

This pilot event introduces the Series of Mahjong League (reclassified as Community Series of Mahjong under ZJMCR v2.2) format using Zung Jung rules. Designed as a cross-variant competitive format, Zung Jung is structured to be legible and accessible to players from all Mahjong backgrounds.
We will be playing on automatic tables. There will be five tables, and players will participate in multiple timed sessions with standardized scoring and seating, simulating a consistent, repeatable tournament environment.
The event will trial league operations, including match flow, scoring, and overall player experience. All players are welcome; familiarity with Zung Jung is helpful but not required. It is recommended that you read the tournament rules before the event.
The first-place player of the event will receive a $100 prize.
Lunch will not be provided at the event. Players must make their own lunch arrangements. The venue itself serves food, and there are many restaurants in the area.
